Tonga and Waitt Institute Advance Key Fisheries and Ocean Initiatives

Nukuʻalofa, Tonga – April 15, 2026 — The Waitt Institute and the Tonga Ministry of Fisheries met today to review progress and align on priority initiatives supporting sustainable fisheries and ocean management in Tonga.

The meeting focused on several key areas of ongoing and future work. Partners reaffirmed their commitment to the continued monitoring of Special Management Areas (SMAs), ensuring long-term sustainability and community engagement. Discussions also highlighted the development of a fish sales program aimed at strengthening market access and improving local fisheries marketing.

Progress on deepwater snapper initiatives was reviewed, alongside plans to advance related activities in the coming months. The team also discussed updates to the Fisheries Management Plan, emphasizing the importance of adaptive and responsive management strategies.

Aquaculture development remains a priority, with ongoing processes and opportunities identified to expand sustainable production. In addition, the meeting recognized several successful initiatives funded by the Waitt Foundation and VEPA, underscoring the impact of continued investment and partnership.
