Tonga National Fisheries Policy
The Tonga National Fisheries Policy outlines the Government’s vision for economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable fisheries that support food security, community wellbeing, and national economic growth. It builds on the Tonga Fisheries Sector Plan and sets policy directions across community fisheries, coastal and commercial fisheries, aquaculture, rights‑based management, and foreign investment. The policy emphasises expanding Special Management Areas, strengthening science‑based management, improving compliance, enabling sustainable commercial development, and ensuring transparent pricing and charging systems. Together, these measures aim to protect Tonga’s modest but vital fisheries resources while empowering communities, supporting industry growth, and ensuring long‑term benefits for all Tongans.
