Act

Ministry of Fisheries Act

The Kingdom of Tonga’s fisheries and maritime legal framework establishes clear national authority over its ocean spaces, sustainable resource use, and responsible aquaculture development. The Fisheries Management Act 2002 (as amended in 2004) strengthens definitions, licensing language, and enforcement provisions to support effective fisheries governance. The Aquaculture Management Act 2003 provides a comprehensive system for licensing, environmental safeguards, designated community roles, and oversight of aquaculture operations, including controls on exotic species and environmental impacts. The Maritime Zones Act 2009 defines Tonga’s maritime boundaries in line with UNCLOS, affirming sovereignty over internal, archipelagic, territorial, contiguous, and exclusive economic zones, and setting rules for marine scientific research, environmental protection, and underwater cultural heritage. Together, these Acts form a unified legal foundation for managing Tonga’s marine resources, protecting the environment, and exercising sovereign rights across its extensive ocean domain
