Nuku‘alofa, Tonga – March 17, 2026 – The Ministry of Fisheries successfully concluded its Planning Week held from March 10 to March 17, bringing together key stakeholders to strengthen strategic direction and coordination for the upcoming financial year.

The week-long planning session included active participation from Fisheries Officers representing the outer island divisions of Vavaʻu and Haʻapai, alongside representatives from the Ministry of Finance. The gathering provided an important platform for collaboration, ensuring that national priorities are aligned with the operational realities and needs of outer island communities.

Throughout the week, participants engaged in a series of structured discussions focused on reviewing current programs, assessing resource allocation, and identifying priority areas for the 2026/27 Corporate Plan.

The inclusion of officers from Vavaʻu and Haʻapai ensured that regional perspectives and on-the-ground insights directly informed planning outcomes. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance contributed valuable guidance on budget alignment, fiscal priorities, and accountability measures, strengthening the Ministry’s ability to effectively implement its strategic goals.

Speaking on the importance of the Planning Week, a Ministry representative highlighted that “bringing together technical officers and central agencies allows us to build a more responsive and realistic plan—one that reflects both national priorities and the lived experiences of our communities.”

The Ministry of Fisheries remains committed to inclusive and collaborative planning processes that support sustainable ocean resource management and enhance livelihoods across Tonga.
